We are an all-inclusive, luxury care home that provides high-quality, tailored care for older people and for those living with various health conditions that come with ageing.
What is Dementia Care?
Dementia is a term that covers a whole host of conditions which affect people in different ways. There are varying levels of dementia, and it’s most commonly known for causing changes to cognitive functions.
Early to mild signs and symptoms of dementia may include struggling to prepare meals, remembering dates and appointments, and experiencing difficulty navigating themselves outside of the home. These signs can be an indication that it’s the right time to look for full-time care, such as a care home. Nurses within our home can help with daily tasks such as getting residents ready for the day and assisting them with their dining, as well as providing any advanced medical care that they require.
We provide care for those living with dementia and our team is highly qualified in offering nursing and nursing memory care. Our dedicated staff are passionate about elderly care and when it comes to dementia, they are committed to helping our residents adapt to their new surroundings. Our team has received extensive training in caring for those with dementia, and are very knowledgeable in offering the right support and identifying when more advanced care is needed.
Dementia Care in Aberdeen
Located in Aberdeen, our home is situated within two-acres of pure tranquillity. Our grounds are perfect for watching wildlife and provide a real calming outdoor space, especially for our residents with dementia. There are also plenty of opportunities for our residents to enjoy the peace of the great outdoors away from the home too, as just a few minutes walk from Rubislaw Park is the botanical gem that is Johnston Gardens.
At Rubislaw Park, our residents can experience the best of both worlds as we are just 3.5 miles from Aberdeen City Centre. This means we are ideally located to regularly provide day trips for our residents. There are many fantastic places available to residents that provide a full and exciting day out. Whether it’s for a spot of shopping at Union Square Shopping Mall and lunch, or a visit to Aberdeen Beach, there is something for everyone.
It is important for all of our residents to keep stimulated and for our residents with dementia, we go to great lengths to create a programme that offers a wide range of engaging and inclusive activities. With all of our residents we listen closely to their favourite interests and hobbies so we can incorporate them into our weekly activities schedule, whether they take place in or outside of the home.
Dementia Friendly Activities
It is important for all of our residents to keep stimulated and for our residents with dementia, we go to great lengths to create a programme that offers a wide range of engaging and inclusive activities. With all of our residents, we listen closely to their favourite interests and hobbies so we can incorporate them into our weekly activities schedule, whether they take place in or outside the home.
When it comes to our residents with dementia, our team is great at including dementia friendly activities such as creating memory boxes, playing board games and hosting musical-themed sessions. Such activities are a great way to alleviate any negative emotions and stresses they may be feeling, and can also help to insight memories. We have even put together our very own dementia choir, who was set up by our dementia unit team leader, Susan Gray. The group meet every Tuesday to sing and play instruments, and they have aptly named themselves ‘The Edelweiss Choir’ after the much-loved film ‘The Sound of Music’.
The choir has both sensory and therapeutic benefits and has seen many of our dementia residents be able to utilise their speech in a way they have not done for a while. The group has a positive impact on our resident’s social wellbeing as after each session, they indulge in an afternoon tea.
Supporting our Residents at Rubislaw Park
Our home is all-inclusive and our care is around-the-clock, meaning that no matter what our residents need or when they need it, the team is always there to support them. It is important to us that our residents feel happy, safe and listened to when staying at Rubislaw Park, which is why we place a great emphasis on building strong relationships with not only the residents but their relatives too. Through creating these bonds with our residents’ loved ones, we now benefit from a Residents Support Group.
The group was formed early last year by a number of our residents’ relatives and has since turned into regular meetings. In these meetings, a variety of topics are discussed, where the common goal is introducing new and fun opportunities to the residents. For example, since the group has been formed, our residents have had new events and excursions organised for them, such as a Gentlemans Rotary Club, a Women’s Guild Forum and pen pals with local schools.
