A Life in Music and Community – Colin’s Story

Moving into a care home doesn’t mean leaving behind the things that make you who you are. For Colin, life at Rubislaw Park Care Home has remained full of music, connection and purpose, with every opportunity to continue doing what he loves most.
Born and raised in Aberdeen, Colin grew up in a large, close-knit Scottish family where music was always part of everyday life. Inspired by his father, a talented musician, he developed a passion that would stay with him for decades. From playing the accordion as a young man to mastering the guitar and piano, Colin’s musical journey even saw him perform in local bands and tour across Europe, including with his band Lemon Soul. Since joining Rubislaw Park Care Home, that passion hasn’t faded. If anything, it has grown stronger.
Life at Rubislaw Park Care Home
Music remains at the heart of Colin’s daily life. He can often be found playing his guitar in the lounge, where fellow residents, staff and visiting families gather to listen, sing along and enjoy the moment together. His favourite song, A Scottish Soldier, is a regular feature, bringing a sense of familiarity and joy to those around him.

Life at the home is about much more than music alone. Colin is a naturally warm and welcoming person, always ready to greet new residents and help them settle in. His friendly nature and willingness to involve others creates a strong sense of community, making a real difference to those around him.
With the support of the team, Colin continues to live life on his terms. Weekly planners allow him to choose activities that matter to him, whether that’s taking part in the choir, enjoying outings, or embracing new cultural experiences such as Chinese New Year celebrations. He approaches everything with curiosity and enthusiasm, always open to trying something new.
Maintaining Independence and Connections
Family remains an important part of Colin’s life. Whether it’s enjoying coffee and cake together, spending time in the bar area, or attending courtyard events during the warmer months, these moments are supported and encouraged. Regular visits and trips out help maintain those strong connections that mean so much to him.
Colin also finds great comfort in the quieter moments. From his room, he enjoys peaceful views of the surrounding woodland, often spotting birds, deer and other wildlife. Spending time outdoors, refilling bird feeders and connecting with nature, brings him a sense of calm and happiness.

A Thriving and Fulfilling Life
Through a person-centred approach, Colin has been able to maintain his independence, continue his passions and build meaningful relationships. His story is a wonderful example of how the right support can help someone not just settle into care, but truly thrive.
